Now that the holiday season is upon us it feels as if every day is bringing something exciting to do. We are scheduled to take a very special field trip to the Glebe on December 17 and began making cards for the residents yesterday. I painted 1 foot on each child to make a moose face to which we'll add antlers later. We will make beaded ornaments as gifts. We will also make special items to decorate your homes for Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa as we learn about the origins and symbols involved in each of these holidays.
Today was International Day here at C.S. as our Bolivian friends teamed up with their American host friends to present different countries. We "toured" Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, England, Italy, Japan, Panama, and Spain. We learned basics about each country, played a game and tasted 1 food. I bet your child will have a very interesting take on this whirlwind tour of the world.
Our class has voted to help a boy and a girl their age have a merrier Christmas this year by filling 2 Salvation Army stockings. My family has done this for years but I thought this very loving class might like to fill several with us. Smaller sized toys, accessories and clothes are encouraged and creativity is appreciated. Several children thought they would like to bring in money which is a great way to finish off the stockings as the due date nears. I will turn these in to my church on Dec. 9 which means the 7th is the last day to send in donations.
In the classroom we are focusing on Rylan's and my favorite letter; R. The child had a little more trouble figuring out the letter was R until Rylan's picture came out of my bag. This may have confirmed the letter but the sound is so close to /w/ that a few mistakes were thrown in as well. the word "right/write" came up and the children were a bit puzzled when I asked how the word was used. Ooh, that silent W is so tricky! We have heard R words all day and I'll bet the dinner table might offer up a few more.
All Scholastic book orders online are due tomorrow but if you decided to wait, next week is our annual Book Fair. The books are often hard copies of favorite titles and there's no waiting for delivery. If you would like to peruse with your child, you are welcome any time it is open or come eat lunch and then run over for a look. Our class will also sing there next Wednesday at 10:30. A flyer will come home today with more details.
Please be sure to read Quick Notes during this busy season. It's often difficult to keep up with all the fun but Victoria has everything listed for us.
