It started with the simple question, "Where do you get all those books from?". I was surprised at Rylan's mystified expression and it momentarily stopped me in my tracks. Suddenly I could see what was occurring in his perspective. I stepped out very briefly from the room and returned with a book in my hand - everyday.
I wasn't going to the store and the library isn't near the school. Where where those books coming from? A HUGE part of me wanted to tell him it was magic but he's on to me now. The teacher in me explained there was a large book shelf unit in the closet. I call this closet "the Room of Doom" because it is in a continual state of being "cleaned" and holds everything imaginable. In fact, when other teachers come borrowing they assume it's in there and begin slowly walking towards it as they ask. Perhaps I need to change my perspective a bit and see this boondoggle as a positive never ending source of pre-school supplies; a magician's hat for teachers!
Our color last week was blue as most of you now know and this week is purple. The children are so enthralled with the pictures of themselves and their color objects, I had to mount the past weeks' color photos and put them on the wall. We won't have a new color next week since it will be a short week.
The letter last week was M and this super letter sound hearing class found 52 words! This is an all time record. The letter this week is T and they found 36 words already. Charlie came in to do Lunch-A-Month with the class and they insisted he add a word. He quickly wrote the word trilogy up and helped them pronounce it. Oddly, they already knew its meaning.
We have learned the story of the first Thanksgiving and the Native American hero Squanto. Ask your child to tell you about him. I've had to tell the story 3 times now and they love to add details along the way. I'm thinking we need to add a national holiday in his honor.
As we discuss the Pilgrims and the Wompanoags, we found many similarities and differences. We also learned that the eastern Native Americans lived in Long Houses, not tepees like the Plains Native Americans. We made a Long House in the room and I put up my Tepee (Yes, it was in the closet.). the children gathered sticks for their fire and pulled out furs and drums from my Thanksgiving box (also in the closet). It's been such fun to play that today we made headbands to wear at Wednesday's Community School Feast.
Your children are bringing home a huge Scholastic set of flyers today. We will not put in an order in December since we have the Book Fair on campus. The flyers do offer some great gift items that may not be in the book sale. All orders are due by November 20. If your order needs to be a secret, please tell me and we'll make arrangements for a pick up time.
Next week is our fabulous all-school luncheon! It's a great time to visit with the families of your children's friends and perhaps forge new friendships. The children and I will walk over at 11:00 to view the Art Show and meet parents for the meal. If you want to meet your child to see their art work with them, meet us in the lobby about 11:15.
Your child will not need to bring anything with them on Wednesday. Really, I mean they don't need ANYTHING. Fruit break will be provided so please leave the backpacks and lunch boxes at home. Consider it the beginning of your holiday.
If you have any questions e-mail me at the school mail (ruthann@communityschool.net). I'll be in the Room of ---I mean the Magician's Hat - getting out supplies for our next exciting unit.
