This certainly has been an eventful week! We began with Karen surprising the class with reading "Caps for Sale" and then presenting the class with the book for our library. We painted caps of four different shapes and colors which I later mounted on the wall over photos of their faces.
Tuesday a feathered visitor delighted the children with his crowing and pecking on the ground. Keri's rooster woke her one too many times and came to school before leaving for a new home in the country. While I wouldn't call chickens the most beautiful of creatures they certainly are fascinating to watch.
Wednesday was Leap Day (just in case a department store sale didn't tell you) and we learned how to play Leap Frog. We leaped all the way out the door in time to go play! We also got to go to the art room with Katrina's class to make friendship bracelets. I had my doubts but children teaching children often can accomplish more than adults.
Today was our school's official Friendship Day. We all met on the playground after recess to sing "The Big One" and exchange bracelets. Everyone seemed very pleased to receive a bracelet made by another child, irregardless of the style or level of proficiency. An all school picnic followed which ended too soon.
This was also the beginning of March and thus, Dr. Seuss month. As much as I love all things "Seuss", This class is beyond excited! There was much cheering when I announced they were going to help me decorate by placing Seuss characters around the room. All the Seuss books and stuffed toys are now out for play and they have already begun play acting as their favorite characters.
Daniel wowed the class in the beginning of the year by reciting "Green Eggs and Ham". Today he picked up "Fox in Socks" and read the first page with the words "Take it slowly. This book is dangerous!". I sent him next door to read part of the book to Keri and instantly we decided to have him read to both classes. While he read the story we had Keri show pictures with another copy and I recorded it. He'll soon be visiting relatives and will have DVDs to leave with them. This afternoon I had several others pick up books to "read" out loud like Daniel. Who knows...?
Tomorrow is our school wide kick off with cake and fun. We sent home a flyer earlier in the week listing our activities needing help from home. Please keep it at hand to help your child be ready for our special days. Monday is "Funny Hat" day. I already have my very colorful hat selected!
