Our Dr. Seuss month is in full swing now. We had our birthday cake to celebrate Theodore Seuss Geisel's birthday Friday and the reading of his books began immediately. Monday's Fun Hat Day produced some very creative work and today's Crazy Socks brought a plethora of color to the room. We even had socks on hands! I can't wait to see what tomorrow's Mismatched/Crazy Shoe day brings. We are adding pictures to the blog with each themed day so look frequently.
We are logging our reading but I do need parents to tell me the number of books read each day at home. So far only two parents have told me so our progress is slow. If you aren't keeping a separate log then please write the numbers in your child's communication notebook.
In our room we made our own "Cat in the Hat" hats, traced our feet for "Fox in Socks" and "The Foot Book" and played Green Eggs and Ham Speedy Diner. This is a fast paced game where our little chefs and servers must place specific food items on trays - or remove them - in a short span of time. We borrowed this game from Harris but it is so much fun I ordered our own from Amazon today.
Monday I introduced the letter B for book. Each year a point comes when the class can guess a letter after only two or three items. Moreover, they can tell the letter's sound even though it hasn't yet been introduced. Monday was my annual moment of amazement as the children quickly thought of numerous words beginning with the /b/ sound.
In honor of Dr. Seuss we read "The Butter Batter Book" which left my tongue buzzing.
This is a book of disagreement about whether bread should be buttered on the top or the bottom and leads to battle. Theodore Geisel wrote this book during the cold war so it ends with a draw between the two groups as each side holds a bomb in their hands. I asked the children what they thought about this and the consensus was people shouldn't worry about such silly things and shouldn't fight even if they disagreed. I like the way they think!
