Listening - ask any parent, wife or teacher and they will tell you more problems are created when we fail to listen to each other than in any other way. Dr. Phil has made a fortune telling us to listen to each other. I have nothing against Dr. Phil and his large stock portfolio but why not train children to listen at an early age and bypass numerous problems?
That's just what we're doing in this room. Our Wise Owl friends joined us Thursday for several "listening" exercises. We began with drums. I have a thunder drum and a gourd drum. Clay lent us a Jim-bay and I added an empty metal can to the mix. I played each drum for the children which they named lion, elephant, giraffe and yippy dog, respectively. They closed their eyes and guessed which drum was being played and were quickly accurate. Next we played a game with pre-recorded sounds on CD. These sounds ranged from a vacuum cleaner to a flushing toilet (which they guessed immediately). One sound was consistently missed, much to my delight. It was the sound of a carbonated beverage being opened and poured. The children enjoyed this so much Sharon suggested we make our own "sounds" tape and play it for our buddies.
This morning we did a little fine motor work using play-do. Each child flattened a ball of dough and then used a bamboo stick to draw a simple picture. They loved the challenge so I will have to up the ante by using toothpicks next time.
We have begun a "me" project that will take this week to complete. I don't want to give away much information but it will be a cute rendition of themselves.
I am still having issues with google and loading pictures from Picasa. Katlyn and her magic fingers are going to try to resolve these tomorrow.
