Zebras bite, ostriches are piggy, camels will eat plastic buckets and kangaroos love to lay in the sun. These are a few of the unexpected things we learned yesterday at the Safari Zoo. As we rode in wagons through the woods filled with exotic animals and fed them, it occurred to me that our children were showing very little fear. Many of the animals looked us in the eye as they ate out of the buckets and their size became all too real.
One elk wrestled Sophia for her food bucket. I jumped in to help (after all I am the adult!) and together we realized he was stronger than both of us. The bucket became his and I handed over the spare so she could continue to feed the other more gentle creatures. The buffalo were quite large but very laid back about this whole "humans feeding me" thing. They walked up to the wagons and stuck out their tongues for the children to drop food on them. It's a good thing they have very long tongues.
It was a wonderful day with perfect weather. I can't think or any animals we wanted to see but didn't. Even the wandering chicken brought cheers of delight. I highly recommend the Safari Zoo to any family looking for affordable one day entertainment.
Today the children made a journal page about the zoo. I was surprised at the varying animals they each picked to draw. They ranged from deer to pythons. The absence of giraffes was, however, shocking!
I took over 130 pictures which have been loaded into my Picasa account and will soon load onto our blog page. Any parents who accompanied us and took pictures are welcome to add their pictures. Please look through them all. There are some very nice photos of children in our class and you can either make pictures from the blog site or tell me and I'll print them.
