Well last week's Dr.Seuss fun ended on a high note with the children (and some teachers) dressing as their career choice when they grow up. Pictures will soon appear on our blog but I should add some explanation so here is what our class chose to be:
Bryan - my dad Emma - princess Evalyn - cowgirl
Gracie - ballerina Kris - monster Logan - basketball player
Xan - zoologist Kim H. - Holly
We will continue reading Dr. Seuss books all month even as we study the continent of Africa.
Yesterday we looked at the second largest continent and some of the animals that call it home. We concentrated on gorillas and learned there were three types in Africa. there are the Eastern and Western lowlands and the Mountain Gorilla. Betcha can't guess how they get their names! One of the most interesting facts we learned was that young males are called "black backs" and pubescent males are called "silver backs". One look at a picture of the two age groups serves as explanation. The gorilla walks mostly in a lumbering four legged fashion but will stand almost erect when there is need. Even at full height it s usually only about two inches taller than me. I am as Xan says, "..what's known as a short adult" so gorillas are much shorter than the King Kong movies would lead us to believe.
Tonight is our Information Sessions night beginning with registration at 7:00. We'll all start in Tulie's room at 7:17 with an introduction by Beth of our school philosophy. We'll then split into the Kindergarten and Preschool age groups for more specific discussions.
What's a strawberry shortcake without the cake? Um... I guess it's strawberries and ice cream which is fine if that's how you like it. Many people, however, prefer the actual shortcake to be involved. If you have been reading Quick Notes you know now is the time to sign up for Baking Day volunteer hours. At last glance, there were several shifts nearly empty and since they are evening shifts, working people can fill them! How's that for a hint?
