It's always a bit confusing when we skip a Monday, especially when the teacher forgets and tries to convince the children it's Monday on a Tuesday. We finally got it right so today we were back on track.

This February has been full with the Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day and now President's Day. We hadn't talked about President's Day until today when I read the story of George Washington's life (minus the suspicious cherry tree incident). This afternoon I read a book called, "George Washington's Teeth" which were not wooden but made from hippopotamus tusk. The book is written in silly rhyme which made the children laugh. I also showed them pictures of the Washington Monument and told them it was the tallest building in D.C. and always would be. They were more amazed that the nation's capitol was named for George.

Last week we did simple weaving as an art project. This week our weaving will become a math project and the introduction to the artwork of Africa. I don't want to say too much but be prepared if you hear that weaving can be very hard work. My goal is to eventually weave with torn t-shirts and old denim strips. Please think twice before throwing away any dark colored t-shirts. I probably can salvage at least part of them.

As we enter the month we will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. Many of us here at school will have fun together by doing something each day next week. The schedule is below. I would also ask that Show & Share this month be your child's 2 favorite books (any author). We will read many Dr. Seuss books in here but if their favorite happens to be a Seuss book they are still welcome to bring it.

Monday Wear your favorite color to school.
Tuesday Wear funny and crazy socks.
Wednesday Wear something wacky.
Thursday Wear a funny hat.
Friday Dress up as what you want to be when you grow up.

In yesterday's Quick Notes you read about the children's mini plays occurring March 15 for our level. Although they are wonderful to watch I always feel for parents who cannot get off to view them. This year I will personally record them and then make DVDs for each parent.

On March 23 we have a wonderful opportunity to go to the Safari Park at Natural Bridge with Keri's and Katie's classes. Since we will be learning about Africa this presents a chance to see of the animals living in this exotic part of the world. It will take the better part of the day so I ask that our 1/2 day children be allowed to stay all day with me. Everyone will need a snack, a lunch and drinking water. We will nap when we return but I already have extra sheets. The fee will be paid out of their activity fund. Parents wishing to accompany will need to pay $11 f0r their fee. We will use the activity school bus and hopefully won't need any parent drivers.

Remember February 15 when Grace brought a strawberry cake and Gracie brought strawberry ring pops? Well that got our minds to thinking and Xan offered up the idea that we could have a mini strawberry festival in our room. We have decided to label our week of fun as "All Things Strawberry" and it will take place the week of April 11 - 15. Keep watching this site for more details!

All this fun should get everyone in the mood for our favorite celebration - the Strawberry Festival! There are still a few committee positions available so please contact Michi if you are interested. I promise it won't become a lifetime position. While the work is hard at times, it is also loads of fun. Everyone is expected to work 12 hours in some capacity so go to the blog site and start signing up for your first choice. Working the actual festival usually account for most of people's hours but baking, berry cleaning, set up and break down are also volunteer hours that count. There's something for everyone.
