As a sewer, there is nothing more satisfying than feeling a piece of cloth between my fingers unless it is seeing a beautiful piece of cloth AND feeling it between my fingers. I have even been known to vocally express my delight - in public! But what does this have to do with school?

The answer is two things. First, we are learning about weaving to prepare for the Art Festival. I don't yet know what creative idea Pat has for our group but it does involve the art of weaving. Yesterday we got out magnifying glasses and observed cotton cloth. We could see the vertical and horizontal (waft and warp) lines of thread making the fabric. We took paper strips to create our own "fabric". Now we could have left them nice and straight but we decided a real artist like Pat or Cherry would change it up a bit. So the wafts and warps went this way and that until they looked like products of the carnival fun house. What a lovely addition to our wall!

The second reason is the Strawberry Festival. Our class may work with Keri's to make market bags but first one must understand a few things about fabric like what it means to "cut straight on the grain". I just know I will convert these children to fabric lovers.

Today was one of those days where the classroom was outside. The children have Music and Spanish first thing in the morning. Our morning time together is spent with our buddies. Today we invited Katlyn and Betsy's classes to join us. We began with one of my favorite stories "The Other side of the Fence". Next the children each found the perfect rock to make into a friend. Between Katlyn and me we had plenty of supplies for their creations. I've never seen such interesting rocks before! There were feathers, sequins, buttons, googly eyes and markers adorning their new friends.

As Lynn reminded me, Monday is President's Day and we don't have school. So don't come. You'll be here alone. Have a great three day weekend.
