Is it me or did our children grow during the break? Their pant legs are getting short, hats are snug and many have spare shoes that no longer fit on their feet. I knew cold weather made me grow wider but I didn't realize it could make children grow taller! You may want to check your child's spare clothes for fit and temperature compatibility.
We started off the new year with a new letter. W is for winter and weasel, walrus, watch, white, wire and watermelon. The children practiced making the W sound with their sound phones and realized many commonly used words begin with W. They came up with a whopping 18 words including wind, wish and Wow!. We also took note that an H beside the letter T changes its sound but an H beside the letter W does not. When I asked them why they thought this might be they concluded that it was a trick and I was still a stinker for trying to trick them once again.
It seems that the break brought many exciting moments for the children so we had to give a little time for sharing adventures. They colored pictures of their favorite activity over the break and then dictated to me. Snow was the highlight for most of the children. I'm not sure I feel the same way.
Gracie had a gift for the class which we opened. They were delighted to find cookie and birthday cake play sets from Doug and Melissa. My sister had also sent the class the Eric Carle book "Papa will you get me the moon?". She also sent a "Jolly in the John Snowman" which surprised them in the bathroom this morning. They weren't a bit surprised that a snowman could talk; just that he knew they were in the bathroom.
We undecorated the class tree yesterday. The class loves looking at the tree and I knew they would be disappointed so we made it a sorting activity and bagged ornaments by groupings. It was so much faster and more fun than my trees will be at home.
Friday, the 17th of December, was to have been our Pajama Day and the children asked if we could still have it. I spoke with other teachers and it turns out that Community School children really want to wear their pajamas to school so.... this Friday is our rescheduled Pajama Day. Please let your child wear their comfy, warm sleep clothes to school. We will still play outside so they will need appropriate shoes. They are welcome to bring their favorite sleep toys/blankets for rest time. We will also watch a movie, probably "Happy Feet", with our schoolmates.
A new Leader calendar has come home in notebooks today. You may notice that a Conference Day is on the calendar. At our level, this is an elective conference. Most of their work has already been sent home the time spanned several holidays. If you or I have a concern or just want to keep close contact we can use this time. If not, we will wait until April for the next scheduled conference. I will either speak with you or write in your child's notebook if I feel I need a conference. Please do the same if you would like a conference.
