My father used to caution me that a computer is no smarter than the per person using it. Just to prove him right, I evidently forgot to click on "post" last Friday so my very informative blog was sent to the "Land of Space Cadets". Let me try to recap and add to it.
Katlyn's class joined us Thursday morning to make reindeer faces. Each child was given a large triangle and two small triangle for a face and ears. I set out various art supplies to complete their faces. The results were adorable! They left us after fruit break so we glittered our Stars of David. They are beautiful and will look lovely in any window or tree.
Friday we were joined by our buddies and began a project for our adopted wing at the VA. Two years ago I was given THOUSANDS of beads by an elderly friend who was entering a nursing home. While we have been using them since I still had a bundle so we pulled them out for holiday decorations. I showed the combined group how to make candy canes with tri-star beads and snowflakes with star beads. There was the third option of creating their own decoration from an assorted collection of beads. There are 60 vets on this wing so I assumed it would take two weeks to make an ornament for each. I underestimated the enthusiasm of this group. They not only made 60 ornaments but had time to make one for themselves.
We also had a table set up to cover coffee filters with gold watercolor paint. These will be used to make angels this Friday. Needless to say, we finished painting too.
Today is the seventh day of Hanukkah. Many families wait until the eighth day to give children the BIG present but our class will hardly see each other tomorrow so I gave them an early gift. I don't usually give a Hanukkah gift to my classes but I saw this on Black Friday and well.... you know the rest of the story. Our leader of the day was given the honor of unwrapping and found a tent and tunnel in the package. Naturally we had to play with it immediately.
While playing, Chelsea and I prepared for making latkes. When the time came, children grated potatoes, added eggs and flour and stirred the concoction. I put large spoonfuls into hot oil and fried the latkes until they were the color of fried chicken. The children were given the options of sour cream, plum jelly and apricot jelly for toppings (I forgot the applesauce) and the eating began. I was very surprised that 4 of the children requested and ate sour cream on theirs. The rest of us ate ours with jelly.
We took about 15 minutes today to walk through the book fair. Beware, your children have already found many books they must have! I tried to capture title or topics to send you.
