What an exciting morning! I was reading Dr. Seuss's first book, "And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street", to the class when our back door was thrown open and a pirate entered the room. "Watch out children, a pirate has come to steal your gold!" I exclaimed. He laughed a deep-throated pirate laugh and said,"Argh!". It was then the children informed me the pirate was not the infamous Long John Silver but Brandon in disguise. With a sigh of relief I allowed him to come close and show us his treasure chest.

When he had finished flashing his gold he announced it was time to sing a pirate song. He turned to me and waited. I thought and thought and finally admitted the only pirate song I knew was naughty and shouldn't be sung to children. That's when it happened. Rowan stood up and led the class in two rounds of "Yo, Ho, Ho, A Pirate's Life's for Me". Spying the quizzical look on my face, Rowan explained it was from Peter Pan. It all came rushing back to me and we sang another round. But the children weren't finished yet. Emma stood up and got them all started on "When I Was One"and they sang it all the way through to the number ten. In case you don't know this song, it was featured at our Barnes & Noble performance led by Kim. These kids sure know how to get the morning started on the right note! (Get it?)

The rest of the day was spent reviewing our -an words and writing -an on our Word Family cards. We played Rhyme Bingo, punched out numbers on foam board and sorted G words into /g/ and/j/ sounds. We also went to book buddies which they love, but somehow the morning sticks out in my mind as the perfect day.
