Thank goodness the snow was only a minor dusting and let us have our full day. We need our time to do really important Early Learner kinds of things!
Sofia was our leader today and she brought two birds on sticks. One was a blue jay and the other was a cardinal. Each had a lever that when pulled made the birds' wings flap and chirp their respective sounds. This is not a class that merely looks at toys. They like a little more information so we talked about the differences in the two birds including their personalities. They have the same general head shape but the blue jay is usually larger and more aggressive. They decided to call it the "bully" bird.
Today we practiced singing our class song. We soon will be able to record it in the computer lab and the children want it to be perfect. Our letter of the week is G so I played the They Might Be Giants song "Go With G". It named many items we hadn't thought of including a gazelle. They wanted to know what a gazelle was and a complete description. Thank goodness for google - after wading through the numerous companies named "Gazelle" I found a picture and information.
Buddy time today involved a service project for the Rescue Mission. Kim's class, along with several others were making cookies for their trip to the Mission and needed help. We helped make chocolate chip cookies today. Our butter was cold and needed to be soft so I showed them how to hit the butter with a wooden spoon to soften hit. Who knew butter could speak and beg me not to hit it?
We didn't have a mixer in the room so I showed them my grandmother's method of mixing. Put one hand in, grab the dough and squeeze with a turning motion. It's often faster than the electric version. I tell you this so you won't be surprised when your children exhibit strange behavior in the kitchen. But I am not responsible for any other strange behavior.
Thank you for so many quick responses to my survey. I just need a couple more and I'll make our chart. I thought I had a pretty thorough collection but the surveys reminded me of a few books I lack. There's a cure for that!
Here's a reminder for next week: Monday is a staff work day so children do not have school. I just glanced over my to-do list and I think I would rather be teaching.
