Since Friday mornings begin with Music and Spanish I don't have as much time to teach as other days. The children have been diligently bringing in change for the Pennies for Peace drive at the school. When we last counted we had $18 and spare change. Today seemed a good day to catch up on our counting. Keep in mind their goal was to collect $27 by the end of March.
I pulled out the 100 mats, emptied the Peace Ball and emptied Sofia's piggy bank before the end of recess. I have made the class a money chart to remind them how many of each coin is needed to make $1. I split the children up to separate silver coins while others placed pennies on the 100 mats. We then stacked and rolled coins and gathered around our large 100 chart to check our progress. We discovered we had collected $17 more dollars. We surpassed our original goal for a total of $35. We needed a new goal and threw around numbers such as $1000, $100 and few odd assortments. Somehow they settled on $50 and I'm betting this class will make it. I was amazed the children focused on this task for an entire hour but watching their money grow seems to fascinate them. Perhaps we have some future bankers in here!
Remember Monday is a teacher work day so no school for the children. During your quality time with your children you might want to sign up for your Strawberry Festival volunteer hours. Perhaps you and your child can come up with items to make for selling in our Community Chest during the festival. They are very creative and everyone loves items made by children! It's just a thought..
