Can you believe it's already the last day of March? And it's Tommy Brown's birthday. That's a bit of trivia I always tell my classes. Tommy was a childhood friend who is exactly 1 day older than me but always insisted I was one of the "little kids". Anyone, just in case you're reading this Tommy, "Happy birthday!".
Yesterday morning I pulled out a new game I bought the class. It is a scent matching game that can be played several ways. I pulled out containers and after each took a sniff they made guesses as to what it was. Apple was first which I thought would be easy. They were torn between pineapple and roses and shocked when I turned over its card to show them it was the scent of fresh apples. We continued on with each scent getting a little closer, except for grass. I guess the long winter made them forget the wonderful smell of freshly cut grass. We ended with an appropriate scent for our school - strawberry. They called it chapstick.
This morning we started an activity exploring words that start with /s/ and /k/ sounds but may really start with the letters C,S, or K. I told them which picture to pull out and they guessed its initial letter. They were right as often as wrong which is the curse of the English language. We'll finish tomorrow and they'll bring them home.
At Buddy Time we had an nontraditional Easter Egg hunt. All the eggs were stuffed with letters or objects. With their buddy they found 6 eggs and opened them. They had to tell their buddies what letter the object began with or tell the something that began with the letter inside. They loved it and re-hid the eggs for a second round of play. Evidently they hide eggs better than me because 4 more have been found since recess. I think I know what we'll be playing tomorrow again.
Here is your warning. I told the class tomorrow was April Fool's Day and it was traditional to play jokes on people. They are delighted to find a day where it is acceptable to trick people. Be on your toes!
