Although we started with clouds in the sky, the day ended as clear and beautiful as any one could request. It's almost as though the sky knew C was the letter of the week. The letter box contained a small can, a cookie, a comb, a box of cocoa puffs cereal, a circle, Chloe's picture, a potato chip, chocolate candy, a picture of a cake, and a cat. These children are getting wise to my ways and suspected it was the letter with no sound of its own - C.
I was surprised at the number of words they thought of that might be a C word. I had pointed out that C used the sounds /K/ and /S/ and many words they thought would be C words would, in fact, not be. But of all their words, only two were K words.
Earlier they had been given a sheet of beautiful cookies to cut out and glue to a plate. Now they knew why I had chosen cookies for their cutting practice. Next we made a book of C words. Each page has the word written out so I encouraged them to try to write the word. Most did and surprised me with their legibility. You will be quite proud of them when you see their work.
We are winding down with our Dr.Seuss reading. They are beginning to request favorite books now. Today I read "I Can Read with My Eyes Shut" which the children knew was impossible. The children asked me how many books he had written which was a question I'd never been asked before. The answer turned out to be on the book jacket of today's book. The answer is 44.
