Your child may have mentioned my leaving school yesterday. I was asked by an old friend to speak with a group of teenage mothers who had returned to school at the Forest Park Academy. It's only appropriate that I was asked to speak to these young mothers about children learning through play. That is what we do best here at C.S..
Michi and Patti filled in while I was away and Michi had several funny stories to share with me later. It's good to have others enjoy my class too!
We have been working diligently on our -at words. Yesterday they were introduced to their new index card file boxes. Each then wrote "at" on the right side of a 4 inch card and put it in their box. Today they wrote p,v h, c, m, r, N, h, f and s on 2 inch cards. We stacked and stapled the letter cards on the "at" cards with the letters to the left of "at". Now each child has a flip book of -at words. They were so excited with their new creation and wanted to bring them home to show everyone. I had them put them in their file boxes and promised they could take all their flip books home at the end of the year.
We have been working on patterns and last week moved from two colors to three. Last week we used paper squares to create patterns. Yesterday we used three colors of beads to make pattern necklaces. I am taking pictures of their finished jewelry and next week they will be able to bring them home.
Thanks to everyone for returning the Conference forms. Connie will publish the "official" schedule in next week's QN. Our class is listed below:

Xan 10:30

If your schedule changes or life happens and a change is needed, just give me a call or drop me an e-mail.
We do not have school Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. Our school traditionally uses the Friday before to announce and regale a local hero. The criteria for selection is simple; we look for a person who has made extraordinary effort to aid others in the local or global community. In the past, I often have not known the person selected and was amazed at their accomplishments. It is common for these people to receive little publicity and possess great humility.
This year's honoree is well known to Community School because it is our own Betsy Bursey. Betsy has adopted numerous people serving overseas (mostly in the Middle East) in the armed services. It was one of those ideas that began as a small service for her son and his friends and has since grown to wild proportions. She finally had to create a Face Book account to communicate with all her new friends. She continuously collects items and sends them overseas and each year has a project for her class to make. She has the entire school involved with making and sending cards, writing to pen pals and collecting treats that will survive the heat. I can't think of anyone who more deserves this award!
Scholastic Book orders were originally due Monday. Today I realized my mistake so please take the long weekend to peruse the flyers and orders will be due Tuesday. I will change the date for online ordering also. Enjoy Monday and I'll see everyone Tuesday.
