We view rain a little differently here at Community School. We don't see it as making a mess of our play area but as an opportunity to create rivers, dams and islands. That's exactly what the children were making first thing this morning. The sand box was very damp on its own but then the children realized more water could be found beneath the swings and the "Community River" grew to rival the James River. Well , at least in their eyes it was huge. I think this type of cooperative play between age groups is the very core of our goal of living and learning as a community.

This morning we were counting on the calendar and discovered that the number cards used made a pattern of 6 pictures. We suspected this might be the case Monday but we had to wait until today to see if it was really a pattern or a coincidence. Predictions have been made on the picture to be found on tomorrow's card. We'll just have to wait and see if we're right.

Our book count is growing in great strides. Team Peyton now has 69 books while Team Eli trails with 38 books. Now this does total 107 books but we raised the bar and decided to see if we could read 200 books by the end of next week. I'm betting this group can!

After Music class we had some time before our buddies came so I taught the class the "Humpty Dump". The "Humpty Dump is a rhythmic, sing-song game with a refrain and different Nursery Rhymes spoken in time as verses. The goal is to have no lapse between refrain and verses so you have to quickly think of a Nursery Rhyme. It is almost a rap and the children always love doing it. When our buddies arrived we taught it to them. Since it was the first time for both groups it moved a little slower than it will later in the year.

We made hand print wreaths with our buddies today. Every buddy pair painted each other's hands green and laid them on white paper in a circle. The end result looks like a wreath filled in with larger and smaller hand prints. Needless to say, more than just hands were green. A spray bottle of soap and plenty of paper towels hid the evidence of our fun.

Kim allowed three of her students to be our lunch guests today. Sophia, Turner and Sydney came in to eat and the children vied to have them at their table. I'm hoping this can happen more often so the buddies can have time to just visit together.

After lunch we had yoga time but today the children led the yoga. Xan started us with a few moves we didn't know yet and then each child gave us two or three poses. Sofia ended our session with a particularly difficult pose (although it was easy for her) she called horse. It was a side plank with one arm and one leg raised off the floor. These children don't realize their own strength.
