We had a wonderful beginning to this new week. Emily Temeles invited all the Early Learners and Lower Elementary classes to a puppet show called "The Greatest Gift". The puppets were manipulated by her class as well as speaking the dialogue and making all the sound effects. The story is about a king who wishes to give his people a lasting gift other than the cake and cookies his court jester repeatedly suggests. Since his people are often cold in the winter her decides some form of energy would be appropriate. He summons the different types of energy (oil, gas, water, coal, nuclear, geothermal, solar and wind) to explain their benefits and downfalls. As he realizes that some pollute and/or may soon be used up he dismisses them. He finally decides the "best gift" for his people would be renewable forms of energy (geothermal, solar and wind). The children were enthralled and able to later tell me about the different types of energy.

After fruit break I introduced a new letter. My box had a napkin, a bag of nuts, a nail , a bag of noodles,2 nickles, a picture of a bird's nest, Nancy Newt the nurse and Nora. Of course Nora's picture was a complete surprise to us all! It did give it away that our letter was "N". Nora smiled broadly but let the others guess. Our activity for today was to make a noodle person. I had 6 types of noodles available and a few beans (for eyes and buttons). They each received a paper with a stick figure drawn on it and I demonstrated by gluing on a mouth (shell pasta) and some hair (curly pasta). I told them not to use my ideas but think of their own ways to use the noodles. They didn't let me down because they came up with some creative uses I would never think up. I can't wait for you to see them. I will ask that they stay here for Open House next week but will send them home soon after.

Don't forget tomorrow is Conference Day. We don't have regular school but we do recommend you bring your child to the conference. It is their moment to shine and show you what they are working on and have accomplished. They have come far in a short time and we can't wait to tell you! I have posted the times below.
