Oh my goodness, what an exciting day we've had! It began like a normal day with the morning circle and "Show & Share". We pulled out letter shapes which is tricky fun - but that wasn't the exciting part.
Fruit break play ended with going to music. Still this isn't the exciting part.
At 11:15 our buddies showed up and then it happened. I passed out a plastic tray, a plastic knife and two slices of bread to each buddy set. We cut one square piece of bread in half and made two rectangles. We cut one of the rectangles and made two more squares. We placed one triangle on top of a square and made a pentagon. We cut a small square diagonally and made two triangles. We put the long side together and made a diamond. We separated the two pieces then cut the point off one triangle and made a trapezoid.
We took our second slice of bread and cut it diagonally into two triangles. We placed the long side together and cut off the top points to make a hexagon. We next cut off the side points and made an octagon. Let's see, we made squares, rectangles triangles, a diamond, a pentagon, a trapezoid. a hexagon and an octagon. What could be left?
Well I used a round cookie cutter to cut circles. We then gently pulled and squished our circles until they became ovals. Wow, now that's exciting! I know my college Math professor would be happy.
I know you are wishing you had been here for the fun so I am sending home a bag with two slices of bread. Go ahead and give it a try. Your child will probably be glad to help you make all these magical shapes. Can you think of another shape we could have made?
Your child also has a set of Scholastic flyers for November. There are some really great books in them this time and you may want to think about Christmas. I sent home Honeybee flyers to families with younger siblings but anyone is welcome to them also. If you choose to order online, the Lucky flyer is also available. It is for children with reading interest on about the 1st and 2nd grade level. We will receive flyers next month from them too.
I will send home flyers next month but it will have to be a rush job to get them back in time before Winter Break.
Let me take a moment to thank all of you for terrific conferences yesterday. I an so proud of the progress each child has made and I know you are equally proud. It was wonderful to have the time with you and your child. Let's do it again!
