We had such a busy day! We started with painting more on our Art Show projects and working on Thanksgiving books.
After Fruit Break play it was time for Music with Kim. Katlyn became ill and had to leave during this time so Tulie and I split up her class until Lynn came to substitute. Our class was wonderful with the four "Nods" in our room. They held their hands and showed them where to sit and were very kind to them.
I introduced a new letter today. My letter box contained a watch, a white crayon, a walrus, a weasel, a whistle, wire and a wolf. They guessed the letter was "Y". It is a common childhood mistake to think the /w/ sound is made by the letter Y so for once I tricked several of them. They weren't too sure they believed me at first but I finally convinced them and showed them how to make the letter. The four "Nods" in our room were very excited to see my felt board and letter shapes. About the time we finished our buddies showed up.
We had two children absent in our class so this left us only two more than usual. Kim had 12 with her today so everything worked out perfectly. Kim and I had decided in advance to have the children make Thanksgiving cards for our soldiers. We provided card stock, markers, feathers, glue and google eyes. The children used each others' hands to make turkey shapes and then together decorated them. They really turned out quite nicely. Pictures will soon be posted on the blog.
After recess we had our four "Nod" friends join us for lunch. Between Lunch-a-Month, the bake sale, two Seminar students and friends, it was a little busy but they had a wonderful time eating together and later playing with the toys. I was so proud of the way my class helped the younger ones understand how to play with the toys and how to assemble pieces. They showed a patience one expects from an older sibling - and most are the older sibling.
The children have asked me to explain "focus fox" to you. This summer I was working with the Roanoke Children's Theater when one of the college students suddenly yelled,"Focus box!" and made a fox looking symbol pointing to herself. Naturally I misunderstood and began calling it the Focus Fox. It caught on so I decided it would be a fun way to get large groups to focus their attention where it should be. Now our class and Kim's class (two of her students were in the camps) use it frequently and I might add, effectively.
As we prepare for Thanksgiving I want to remind parents about the Thanksgiving Luncheon and that an entree and side dish are needed from each family. We teachers will provide dessert - which just happens to be my favorite course. The Early Learners are going to have special time together next Monday. We will gather for a movie, make our Friendship Mix and make Pilgrim and Indian hats to wear next Wednesday. You may send in your child's food early and we'll store it for Monday.
