The morning raced by since I had the children only a short time before they had their Enrichment classes. We were led in the calendar by Sofia and then we looked at her book called "The Human Body".
This is one of those wonderful books with layered pages that peel up to reveal inner body parts. The children insisted we look at each layer and that I explain the parts. Fortunately for me, the book had easily understood explanations so I could tell them what each of the main systems did in the body. When we got to the Digestive System I knew we would have some "end product" comments but they were very mature about it. Chloe did, however, share a cute story that her sister had swallowed one of her pennies and it was going to come out later. They all seem to understand just how and where it was going to come out.
The highlight of the book was the Nervous System. The brain did not interest them at all. No, they were fascinated that the spine enveloped nerves. I used Sofia's back to show the location of the spine and once they realized it might tickle to have a finger run down their spine, they all wanted to be the demonstrator. Ah... there's nothing like science through the eyes of a child!
There was a fire drill during Specials today. This would normally have no relevance to the classroom except for the need to empty sand out of shoes. Once I realized that four of the seven children in the room had removed shoes for this purpose I announced they could rest without their shoes. It was like turning them loose in a candy store! All shoes came off and the dancing began. If only they would always be this happy with the small things in life.
We are still working on their Art Show bags for next week and they really are looking quite good. Everyday they think of yet one more way to add to their art. I can't wait to see the final product.
