My morning began with only five children. I checked the clock twice but it was past 8:45 and still only five children were here. Just as I was concluding that the flu had hit our school I looked up to see four more little faces. Whew, I much rather have a late class than a sick one! Perhaps our beautiful weekend wore everyone out.

Our leader was sick this morning so I did the calendar. I tried to trick the children by starting with yesterday instead of today but Nora was paying close attention.

We next read the adventures of Rhyming Bear and his weekend with Chloe. Since Chloe had a ballet lesson they dressed Rhyming Bear in an old set of leotards and off he went to dance. Chloe brought pictures of the two of them in class and the stickers they earned. So far Rhyming Bear has played in leaves, gone camping, trick-or-treated (in costume) and had loads of snuggle time. He's having a great life with this class! I'm going to have to buy a photo album to record his fun. It's too bad I'm not the scrap booking type because this is definitely worthy of such a keepsake.

Today we talked more about the lives of the Pilgrims and the lessons from their Wompanoag friends. I added more pictures to our bulletin board as we talked about the new animals and birds they learned to hunt. I also showed them a canoe and talked about how they were made then and today's canoes look very much like the 17th Century counterparts. We also looked at the types of homes used by the Wompanoags and the type the Pilgrims built.

After fruit break I brought out the letter box. Inside were a number two, a turkey. one tinker toy, Titus, a tomato slice, a toothbrush and Timmy the Turtle. They quickly knew T was the letter and that Titus used the uppercase to start his name and a lowercase in the middle. After this we sang "Five Fat Turkeys Are We". I have an unfeathered turkey on my wall and showed them the feathers to go him. These will be gratitude feathers and each child will get three feathers to tell me three things they are thankful for before I add them to our turkey. I have the same turkey and feathers in miniature form and together we made up a rhyme to create a book of our own. The words are below:

One little feather was feeling blue. H found a friend and then there were two.
Two little feathers found a key. They opened a door and then there were three.
Three little feathers went to the store. They found a friend and then there were four.
Four little feathers went for a drive. They found another friend and then there were five.
Five little feathers went for a sail. The wind blew them up and they landed on a tail.

I can't wait to finish the book. I promised them they could read it to Holly and Michi when it was completed.

It was so beautiful and warm by lunch time we threw our blanket on the grass and had a picnic. Katlyn's class joined us for a very peaceful lunch. Afterwards we went to the Spanish room to view The Upper Elementary students' Hispanic projects. They put a lot of work into this project and although our children didn't really understand the significance of the impact of some of the people they studied, they were impressed with the pictures and the class' knowledge of their subject.

Two reminders for you:
Wednesday and Thursday are Open House.
