I apologize for this late posting but my work computer (or the school server) wouldn't cooperate this afternoon!
We jumped right back in to our weekly activities beginning with celebrating the last day of November and the last time we would gobble during calendar time. The children are a bit confused about tomorrow and the name of the new month. We had a long discussion concluding that the new month's name is December, not Christmas, and that there are three Holidays in December this year. We will discuss Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. Since Kwanzaa begins December 26 we can't really celebrate but we will learn about it like the others.
Grace brought a delightful "Rudolph" book for "Show & Share" today which started another discussion (Can you tell we like to talk?) about Christmas programs on television. Everyone named their favorite and then I announced that each Thursday or Friday in December they would get to view a movie. I have "A Charlie Brown Christmas", "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and my personal favorite "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol". For some reason they didn't seem to know who Mr. Magoo was but I know they'll love him!
The letter M was introduced today. Our box contained a milk bottle, m&m's, a small bag of money, a moose, a mouse, mittens, a magnet and a muffin. With an introduction like this I just had to read Laura Numeroff's "If You Give a Moose a Muffin". After fruit break play we made monkey puppets which were mighty cute. Later in the day I showed the children my metronome which they previously discussed in Music. It holds a great fascination for them although I have regarded it as the enemy much of my life.
Tomorrow is our Spanish Festival. Parents are invited to attend if you desire. We begin at 9:15 and move to new sites and countries every 12 minutes until we finish at 11:16. I know the Bolivian and MS students have worked very hard for this day and are using almost every room in the big white house. Those who ordered a lunch from El Rodeo will have it delivered to the room by 12:15. We'll scrounge up some extra chairs, throw down the picnic blanket and have a fun time.
Our class is going to participate in two great giving projects this month. We will collect mittens (or gloves) and hats, as a level, for needy children and we will read 100 books by Dec.18 to earn 100 books for a needy classroom. We are hoping to have enough mittens and hats to decorate a tree. We will deliver them to the Rescue Mission at Winter Break.
The Scholastic Book company runs the book campaign each year and this year Eli and Peyton Manning are the sponsors pushing for children's participation. Our class had to pick either Team Eli or Team Peyton. Naturally it took much discussion and we finally decided to let both teams read in our room. Tomorrow your child will have a book list stapled to their notebook. When you read to your child at home you simply write the date and number of books read. We will add it to our class total along with the books read in the room. This shouldn't take long for our class.
Don't forget our Barnes & Noble fund raiser beginning Saturday. Our Early Learners perform at 11:00 sharp Saturday morning. Please give vouchers to all your friends, family and neighbors. Vouchers are available at B&N and on our Quick Notes. You can print off your own or tell me the desired number and I'll print them for you!
