We had too much fun today to call this school. This year's Early Childhood (Southwest chapter) Educator's conference theme is "Learning Through Play". They must have looked into our class for their inspiration.
First we did our calendar and then Logan pulled out his "Show and Share". That's when it started. He had me play a song called "I Never Go to Work" by They Might Be Giants. This hysterical song goes through the days of the week telling just what they do instead of work. The chorus is "I don't go to work." and has become my new theme song. This group from Australia formed in their college years and began writing silly songs for children. They caught on and now Disney features their music. I think they have the right attitude about enjoying life. We had to play the song several times and dance along. I do have this song on one of their CD's but naturally I later got to looking and realized their newest CD not only has this song but several other great laugh along songs. It will soon be playing in our room where we don't work, but play our way through the day.
Next I handed out a book to each child about pumpkins. It is similar to the book they received last week about leaves. This book begins all but the last page with Pumpkins by the... The children colored their pages and then came to me to "read" their book. Yes, this is memorization to a point but they also recognized the word "the" from last week. They were so excited to already know a word in their book. I pointed out that last week's book used the word "on" and our new book used the word "by" so then they knew another word. Most of the books will come home today. See if your child can read it to you.
The Middle School held an all school celebration for 350 Day at noon today. We talked about the amount of trash the school had been throwing away and the current amount of trash since we began recycling. It turns out the we reduced our trash weight by one Titus. Earlier Emily weighed our level to demonstrate the amount we were throwing away which was Grace, Nora, Brandon, Ryley and half of Michael. Titus was the hero as our contribution to help save the Earth and got a round of applause!
Since we were still in a celebratory mood we had a picnic with Katlyn's class. They love coming into our room and our class loves to play the role of big kids. It's a win-win situation.
After our friends left I played another great song. I put a round sticker on each child's belly and played "The Belly Button Song" from the Philadelphia Chicken CD. They listened first and then made up their own dance on the second playing. Man, have we got some moves in here! Maybe it's because these children already know to live each day with joy. Thanks for sharing their spirit with me.
