Today was the birthday celebration day for Sofia. Her true birthday is next Monday but since we have an in-service day we celebrated early. The children were so sweet singing and giving her hugs.

This morning I read a new book called "Sad Monster, Glad Monster". It's a book about expressing feeling and reflecting them in one's face and actions. Each emotion has a monster mask making an appropriate face. They loved the masks and then making faces themselves. Foe each emotion I asked them what made them glad, sad, worried, etc.. When I asked about the glad I fully expected to hear playing outside or getting new toys. Instead I heard being with parents, going to Spanish and making music. These children have already realized materials objects can bring us the happiness that other people can. I can't think of anything else as important to teach them. Kudos to you parents for instilling such wonderful values in your children!

Playdough was a highlight for us today. Jeanne Counihan made four Halloween colors with scents. We all took turns sniffing and then got to the business of creating. I reminded the children this would be a good time to practice their good manners in sharing and asking nicely for cookie cutters and colors. Emily Post would have been proud of them. Jeanne also sent along the all natural recipe which includes coloring with food instead of bottled food colorings. I already made copies for several teachers and will gladly copy it for parents.

We took a little trip down the Middle School path today to look over our compost bin. We talked about how we would be layering dirt and compost. Later in the winter we'll make a hotbox out of it and plant flower seeds. Hopefully we'll have flowers to sell at the Strawberry Festival.
