The morning began so nicely. Even though we postponed our Jeter Farm trip I had a wonderful little book for the children to color and read. We practiced "reading" so they could read for you tonight. The word "Leaves" is underlined on each page to cue them. They were very excited have their own book to take home and show off.
After music we let the children play until the rain came. Knowing it wouldn't be long, we had a surprise planned for them. Tulie popped corn for everyone and we watched a Barney Halloween video.
This brought us to lunch time which is when the disasters began. First, drinkable yogurt was spilled and then a hand went into my permanent ink pad. By the time these two messes were clean a sandwich had landed on the floor accompanied by tears. I then announced to Aaron Plaski (who was having lunch with Sofia) that I really had meant to become a brain surgeon. This was followed by another spill and I was reminded that brain surgery was still a possibility. I was thinking I needed it at this point! Next a full bottle of water spilled on a child who had only warm weather clothes in her clothes bag. What's a teacher to do? I did the only thing I could think of at the time and pulled out Judith Viorst's "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day".
The children agreed it was perfect for today, even if Alexander kept wanting to go to Australia. Rest time soon followed and all disasters were cleaned, changed and quiet.
I spoke with Mr. Jeter today and our new field trip day is Monday, Oct 26. He saved this as a rain date and gave us the first time slot. So we will still leave a little after 9:00 and arrive by 9:30. We will have the use of the school's activity bus which carries 14 in car seats. This will ease the need for parent drivers but families are still welcome to join us. We will need to transport 14 more children so let us know if you are available and the number of children you can fit in your vehicle.
Tomorrow's plans will not be changed by weather because we can go indoors for many activities and be under the overhang for our cookout. We will not be defeated by Mother Nature!
I am confident the children will have a great day tomorrow and the parents helping will love it too. Hopefully tomorrow afternoon will not be a repeat of today or you will find me in Australia.
P.S. This would be a good time to put cold weather clothes in your child's bag!
