Today we had our first "compost" lesson. The children wanted to immediately start so they kept their banana peels and bits of paper to make their first additions. Unfortunately their teacher did not confirm that the compost area was indeed ready so I'll be carting home some interesting treasures for a few days. I also compost so nothing will go to waste. My car, however, may not ever smell the same again!
We did a fun clapping song today with one of my Greg And Steve CDs. The children must repeat a clapping rhythm which is simple in the beginning but gets more complex. It was hard at the end but they love it so we pulled out my rhythm sticks. I started with a simple ABAB pattern which they quickly conquered. Next I added another ABAB pattern. This went on until we had four sets of patterns to remember and reproduce. They have been noticing patterns in clothing and on our calendar so this was a great time to explain that music is also made up of patterns, both rhythmic and tonal.
They had their special music time with Kim today. She takes all 28 Early Learners at once on Wednesdays (She is indeed a superstar!) and has a Hollins worker help with crowd control. I know it is going well because everyone is smiling when they leave.
Our day ended with a fire drill right after rest time. We fortunately were up and already outside playing. It can be havoc trying to round up playing children but our class immediately found me and walked to our "safe" area. I was very proud of them, again.
