This morning we had our first opportunity to write a journal page. Our class will be making their own story journals this year. I told then I wanted them to use their imaginations to complete a story that started with "It was raining outside and we couldn't go out to play. So my friend and I...". When I asked if they knew what the word imagination was Xan quickly raised his hand and said, "It means to pretend in your head.". I couldn't have said it better myself.
I love to use story journals to gauge the language of children as it matures and their vocabularies increase. These pages also require the child to first draw a picture which is another method to gauge the progress of fine motor skills. There is no judgment on artistic ability, however, since I am challenged in this area!
Tuesday is the big day to see all three Enrichment teachers. I walked into the music room after it started and heard them singing and dancing to a song about elephant wrinkles. I can't wait for them to sing that one to me!
Before rest time today we read an old book by Syd Hoff called, "Danny and the Dinosaur". It's been on the shelf for awhile and after watching the mean man-eating dinosaur play it was probably time to have a story about a nice dinosaur who befriends a little boy and goes out of his way to be a helpful reptile.
I told the children I was able to order three more Babar books this morning from Amazon. I was able to find "Babar and Father Christmas", "The Travels of Babar" and "Babar and his Children". They couldn't understand why I didn't bring them with me. I had to promise I would bring them as soon as they arrived.
