As much fun as Dr. Seuss month is, nothing is more fun to me than reading "Horton Hatches an Egg". The very thought of an elephant sitting on a nest has long intrigued me and at the end when Horton gets his reward for being faithful, it reminds me that good can win in the end!
Today we discussed how an elephant could sit on an egg without breaking it. Daniel volunteered to be our baby elephant and sat on an egg. We were all delighted to hear the"crack!" of the breaking egg and although a bit of yolk was on his backside, Daniel laughed harder than anyone. We knew then that Horton surely didn't sit directly on the egg. Alora pointed out the egg was in a nest so Horton really sat OVER the egg. We tried having Daniel sit on a stool over an egg and sure enough... the egg didn't break.
Friday is the school egg drop so we moved our discussion to how we could then drop an egg without it breaking. The class thought of some very interesting ideas and gave me my list of items to find while they were at drama class. I gathered our newly donated parachute and a bucket (Dawson's idea), bubble wrap (Daniel's idea), pillows and tape (Oliver's idea). I went to Beth for rule clarification because Rylan was sure a bouncy bounce would prevent breakage and Sam wanted to try a small wading pool filled with water. Protection on the ground was vetoed but we still had 3 things to try.
We prepared our eggs and went out to the office to test our ideas. Rylan was the official keeper of info on successful (or not) attempts while Sam and Django were the official egg checkers. One by one I took the idea people up the stairs to drop the goods. I will tell you 2 of their ideas worked while the 1 I expected to be successful ended badly for the egg. You'll have to ask your child how it all turned out! You can see the great event at 10:30 Friday morning.
Friday is also Wear Green day in honor of St. Patrick's Day.
Tomorrow is an inservice day for the teachers but no school for the students.
Thursday all book orders are due whether online or by sending it in to me.
Please send me an e-mail or send in your child's form so I can track our Lorax Project progress. Your child's outside play at school counts with a minimum of 45 minutes a day. We also did yoga for 45 minutes yesterday.
