Was it his gentle nature or the orange and brown of his shirt that attracted the butterfly? We'll never know the answer but it was obvious that our newest butterfly was attracted to Sam. It popped out of its cocoon around 9:45 this morning so we figured its wings might be dry by 1:00 and brought it outside. It was hanging on the burlap square covering the top of the jar and remained there as I laid it on the ground. Sam was sitting nearby and put one finger towards it. As if it knew who to trust it climbed on Sam's finger and stayed for a good 20 minutes before venturing off to its new life in sunny Mexico. I was able to take pictures which are on our facebook page. You'll want to see these!
As if all of the world knew, our color of the week is orange. Rylan was anxious to see the new color and could hardly believed it when I put up a color matching his shirt. I turned around and realized Sylvana and Sam were also in orange. It's great to have pictures to take on the first day of the new color!
Our letter is P and after working on the difference between P and B's sounds we were able to make a long list of P words. We began the art project of the week which was ... I bet you guessed pumpkins, right? Well you would be right. We began by stuffing brown lunch bags with torn and crumpled newspaper. Rubber bands secured the top and gave us a stem. We then used additional rubber bands around the fat section to make the sections of a pumpkin. We will paint them orange tomorrow and Thursday.
Wednesday will be a very special field trip. We will go to the Taubman Museum and watch the Roanoke Children's Theater perform "Pinkalicious". This is a very popular children's story about a little girl whose love of the color pink goes a little too far.
We will use the school's bus and teacher vehicles. We will let parents know in the notebooks tomorrow if we need your child's car seat.
