The letter L last week naturally meant we got deep into leaves (literally). We collected them, watched then dry out, felt them and painted our own. Coffee filters have so many more uses than advertised. I cut leaf shapes from the filters and then we used sponge daubers and watercolor paint. As the filters soaked up the paint we saw colors run together to create a very realistic effect. They are beautiful and will look lovely hanging up.
The color for this week is red. In an "I Spy "game inside the classroom, the children found 27 objects that were mostly red. Again this week I have asked the children to bring a red item from home. Alora found 5 objects from her house, including a firefighter's hat. She was willing to share with the other children but it just happened that I had a collection in my bottomless closet. The children donned hats and the camera began clicking. Their faces are priceless.
Our letter study is F which seems to be easier heard than said. We practiced gently biting our lower lips to make the sound and then they took off finding words beginning with F. Their list was quite long when we stopped but they have been hearing words since. So far, all the words brought up to me have been classroom suitable and I thank you for this!
We are working on a great F project but I think I'll wait until conferences to show you these.
In researching indoor and greenhouse gardening I ran across something new to me: window bottle gardens. Two liter bottles are strung vertically with strategically placed holes for water to drip from one bottle to the next. Soil and plants are in each bottle and grow out of a hole cut in the side of the bottle. The children wanted to watch a youtube video I found on the subject. Sam was sure we could make then if I brought in my drill and Rylan was ready to start. I don't think we have enough sunlight entering this room to work but I may try it at home. If anyone else wants to give it a try, I'll copy the plans for you. I'm sure Sam and Rylan will help you.
