Our first full week of school flew by with just a few tears and a lots of happy faces as the children found new playmates and explored the classroom toys. Although over half of the class knew each other from last year, it was more of an acquaintance situation. It has been fun for me to watch the entire group meld with an openness to new comers and old friends.
Our school theme of "Creating Ripples, Making Waves" focuses on the theory that the ripple effect from one person, action or idea can result in a wave of change. To a four year old this is very abstract idea so we are reading the Laura Numeroff series beginning with "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie". Each action leads to a new thought and action.
After graphing our favorite cookie types, the children decorated (cardboard) cookies with either small m&ms or mini chocolate chips. The children then drew a picture of a cookie and dictated the "recipe". While most understood flour and sugar were involved a few added new ingredients like peanut butter and a TV.
This week were are reading "If You Give a Moose a Muffin". I can't even imagine what they will include in their muffin recipes!
Tomorrow night is a very important night for Early Learner and Lower Elementary families. It is our annual Gatherings evening for your child's teachers to share school information, Fall Festival Information, introduce the Enrichment teachers and most importantly, enter into our community of parents, children and staff. You will find you have much in common with other families. Many friendships and car pools have arisen from these meetings along with answering many questions. It only takes 30 minutes (7:00-7:30) and we promise you will leave feeling it was worth your time. No childcare is available so please make arrangements. Some families find they can send only one parent and that is also fine. We will meet in the art room in the large white building. This also serves as the After School room.
