Just when you think it's going to be an uneventful week, Mother Nature steps in to change everything. Tuesday morning we noticed two of our chrysalises shaking and suspected we would soon be proud parents of butterflies. By lunch, two had emerged and a third began to shake. This morning we were welcomed by four Painted Lady butterflies. They are currently dining on a sugar water mixture sprinkled on flowers while we await the arrival of our fifth friend. Butterflies only live two to four weeks so we are hoping to have a butterfly release next week. This should give them time to find spots to lay their eggs rather than raising another generation in captivity.
As if this wasn't enough fun, the children made a wonderful discovery while playing on the lawn this morning. They found beads. They found lots and lots of lovely beads which they felt compelled to collect and store in my pocket. In a moment of self-preservation, I suggested we bead bracelets and necklaces. The next thing I knew we had out EVERY bead in my class collection out for future adornment. After making themselves a bracelet they moved on to making them for siblings, absent classmates and friends in other rooms. How could I say no to such thoughtfulness? Lesson plans can wait when life presents us with its best lessons.
Next week will have some planned excitement. We will have a field trip to see "Go, Dog Go" based on the P.D. Eastman story of the same title, tie dye t-shirts and have an Early Learner water day. Sometime in all that we will release the butterflies. I think I'm going to need naps next week.
