Friday was absolutely the perfect day to walk over to Hollins for shortcakes! It was neither too hot or too cold and the sun begged for children to play. So we did. After eating our yummy strawberry treats and drinking cold water we wandered down to the creek near the Troll Bridge and found sticks just the right length to stir up water without actually getting ourselves very wet. Well... almost everyone had sticks. I soon found myself laying on my belly with arms stretching over the water reaching for more sticks. I was suddenly transported back to my lazy summer days of childhood when I was expected to play in water, the woods, on trails and climb trees. And that's why we weren't back on campus until 11:30. Our children were very busy...being children.
We won't know the financial results of the Strawberry Festival until Celebration night but as I walked around Saturday and saw so many CS families enjoying time together I thought this could only be counted as a huge success. I also got to see several families of children who no longer attend our school but still wish to support us. One family even brought the newest member who is a mere 2 months old but not too young to meet her soon-to-be preschool teacher!
This week will be almost as eventful as last week. Tomorrow is our last on-campus rehearsal for the Arts Festival. We will also finish our art projects this week and deliver them to Pat. Friday is the El Rodeo picnic for all Early Learners. You probably read in Quick Notes (I hope you're reading them!) that the cost is $5 in cash and parents are welcome to attend. Lunch will be served soon after 12:00 and over by 1:00 so maybe you can spend your lunch hour with your child. Please let me know in advance and send your money ASAP so Elena will have the necessary count and money for El Rodeo. Our half day students have been asked to stay until 1:00 and so far it seems to have worked out.
Today we read Eric Carle's "The Grumpy Ladybug" which gives an hourly account of one ladybug's attempt to pick fights. She eventually encounters a whale whose tail swishes it back home. We began making ladybug clocks and talked about reading the hour on a clock and counting by fives to find the minutes. Both of these subjects have been topics of discussion among the children lately and they were so surprised I began talking about them today. Hmm.... maybe this teacher has her "listening ears on" too.
