I thought the children would be sad to see our spiders, ghosts, witches and bats come down but it seems that a new noise to accompany the new month has replaced them. For the last three years I have added noises to the names of months to help them remember the month. Who knew a turkey gobble could elicit so many giggles?

Discussion of the Thanksgiving holiday naturally brings a history lesson with it and today we began talking about the Pilgrims and the Wompanoags. I have personally come to appreciate this sad/happy chapter in our country's history. The cooperative effort of two very different races for survival and in celebration still has a message for people today. It is a story of tolerance, acceptance, sharing and helping that are at the root of our school's philosophy. Before they eat their first bite of turkey this year, your children will understand the importance of this day.

On another note, (or should I say letter?) we have a new letter this week. My letter bag had a purple platypus, a pink pig, a purse with three pennies, a palette of paint, popcorn and pictures of poodles and a piano. Using their "phones" they were able to isolate the /p/ sound and Kris excitedly announced the letter was "P!". It took a few false starts but the children were able to add perro, puppy, pepper, popsicle, Pitu (Kris' mother), peas, pie, peanuts, pop and pool.

After fruit break play, we made pizzas with English Muffins, pizza sauce and cheese. Thirty seconds in the microwave cooked our snack to perfection. We discussed other toppings we could have added during which I threw in as many P words as could possibly make sense. They caught all of them and even a few that were unintentional.

As we have learned letters we have learned yoga poses to accompany them. Here they are for those of you who practice, or would to start, yoga:
L is for lightening bolt and lion
T is for Tarzan thump, tree, table and twist
H is for hot air balloon and happy baby (the class favorite)

Have your child show you how to do each one. It's always fun with children when they are the teacher and you are the student. Namaste
