My little farmers have been at it again. They have had a week full of learning about seeds and planting them. Over the last five days they have planted thyme and rosemary in terrariums, bachelor buttons and giant sunflowers. The daily watering of plants has become a source of great pride (and jealousy) even if most of the water ends up on the sidewalk.
Yesterday we looked a little more closely at seeds. We noticed the aril (seed covering) on the lima beans was beginning to separate. Next we broke open one of the giant sunflower seeds to look at the actual seed inside. The children were surprised to see the seed was so much smaller than the protective shell.
Today worked on Mother's Day gifts with our buddies. Let's just say this explains the pink and purple stains on your child's fingers.
Next week will be exciting with the Strawberry Festival countdown and El Rodeo week in Spanish. Thursday is El Rodeo Day for the Early Learners. It is a tradition for Elena to take each class to the restaurant to celebrate all they have learned. At the restaurant, they order their meal in Spanish. The Early Learners switched to an on campus meal last year and liked it so much we decided to do it again. The meal will begin at 12:15 and will be picnic style. There is a cost of $3.50 per child (or adult) which includes a cheese quesadilla, one taco, chips and salsa. Since drinks are not included, they may come from home if your child does not already receive milk. Parents are welcome to join their child and may also order a meal (still $3.50). We are requesting that half day children stay until 1:00 so they may partake in the fun. We do need money by Thursday. Elena says cash or checks will be accepted.
We have a Strawberry Festival tradition that on Friday of the festival, children eat a strawberry shortcake here at school. Since our children tend to eat less we have them eat 1/2 a shortcake serving. In the past parents have had to pay for this unless a generous soul sponsored a class. This year, After-School is sponsoring this event for the campus so no money is needed from parents. I personally am thrilled to see money paid by C.S. families is staying right here and being used directly for the children. If you see Lynn, who heads up After-School as well as subbing, you may want to thank her.
