"Super Sounders" - that's what I call my class now. Yesterday I introduced the letter S and asked them to think of as many words beginning with S as possible. Using their sound phones to confirm the sound they thought of 32 words! During the rest of the day as S words were used in our speech, they were very excited to add new words to their list. I did expect several of my students to be at this point by now but to have most of the class here is indeed thrilling. Why don't you try using as many S words as possible at the dinner table and see if your child catches on?

We have begun discussing Antarctica and the wildlife native to it. We briefly discussed this barren continent during November when we painted aprons but I have a few interesting tidbits still up my sleeve. The first one I shared was Antarctica was a desert. Perhaps I have been a stinker and fooled them once too often because when I told them this little known fact they just smiled indulgently and said "Sure it is.". The definition of a desert is based on the amount of rainfall received. Since Antarctica's water is frozen and less than 2 inches of rain (snow) falls annually, it is a desert.

Penguins are the subject my flock is willing to follow on the journey through Antarctica. They love our tuxedo clad friends and were surprised when I showed them the Emperor penguin, the largest specie of penguin, is no taller than me. Just wait until I show then how a penguin stays warm!

Scholastic flyers will come home today. Please take a little time to peruse the selections available. If you choose to go online, there are more catalogs available for different age levels and interests. The letter accompanying the flyer gives directions on the process.
