Usually the day after Halloween is a nightmare for teachers. My class proved that old theory wrong today when they came in ready to learn.

We began with the letter of the week which was L. I pulled out an old book I made with kindergartners years ago. It's called "Making Lemonade" and has pictures made with lemon prints, seeds and colored paper all illustrating the steps for making lemonade. Next I pulled out a lion (a LITTLE lion they pointed out), a leaf, pictures of a ladybug, lamp and a llama and a photograph of Logan. The children were thrilled Logan's picture was in the bag, especially since they all know his name starts with L.

We are going to celebrate Diwali Friday so in preparation I planned for the children to make clay lamps. Naturally they quickly realized lamp was an L word. We threw our clay (to remove air bubbles) on the tables and began shaping bowls that could hold tea light candles. They will dry in a couple of days and then can be painted in festive colors.

To finish up our academic day, they class drew pictures of themselves at Halloween. They will dictate their stories tomorrow.

Scholastic Flyers will come home today with most of the children. The annual Holiday Gift Books flyer is included. Many parents use the November flyer to order holiday gifts so you may want to take a close look. We may not send home the December flyers. If you don't want your child to see books when they arrive just write me a note and we'll make arrangements.

After looking through the flyers I do have several recommendations for parents but this is by no means a complete list.
