We began a new letter study today. Since the children had picked the letter in advance they weren't surprised but ready to see what objects in the bag were "P" words. I had pink paper, a pencil , a purse with three pennies, a paint box, a purple duck-billed platypus, play pizza, a picture of a piano and a poodle. The class was ready for me and quickly added Peter Pan, princess, please, play, penguin, pepper, pass and puppet to the list.
I pulled out my basic letter shapes and showed the class how to make a P with a long straight line and a small curve. I gave them each a bag of shapes and they made their own letter. Although I had just formed the "P" for them, 1/3 of them put the curve on the wrong side. This is to be expected and gave me the opportunity to explain the importance of right and left letter positioning (not in those words).
For a related art project, I sprayed pink and purple foam paint on a tray. Then I taped paper to the bottom side of a table and let them lay on the floor to paint. Foam paint doesn't drip but Bryan was still pretty sure I was crazy. I told them to pretend they were Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel. Bryan still thought I was crazy. Those that painted loved the process and we'll try to finish up tomorrow. I wonder if Bryan will still think I'm crazy?
As we prepare for our trip to Jeter's Farm let me share what information I have confirmed from parents. Jacinda will drive and take 3 children plus Evalyn, Teresa will take Grace, Laura will take Gracie, Kim will take Xan and Neal will take Bryan. Kris and Logan will ride the bus. If you were counting you realized I accounted for more than 9 children. This includes a plan for the unknown circumstances that will crop up. If you know of a change in these plans already please let me know right away so this mother hen can keep track of her chicks and keep her feathers unruffled. Tomorrow I will send home notes for the children whose car seats need to be left at school. Please remember to have your child's name somewhere on the car seat.
Today is the due date for Scholastic Books. If you forgot to order you still can do so online tonight. I will finalize the order in the morning.
