Because of the timing of our study of the letter F and our pending trip to Jeter's Farm, we have been discussing both topics. In talking and reading about corn mazes I realized the children didn't know what wither a maze or a maize were. One of our books had a picture of a cornfield maze so they quickly caught on to that concept. It just happened that I had a bundle of maize (Indian corn) that I could show them.

Since all they were acquainted with was the corn we typically eat in the summer, they were fascinated with the different colors of the maize. As we looked at the maize Xan asked, "But what are we going to do with it?". Now that's a question every teacher loves! We pulled out paint, foam brushes and tag board. We mixed a few colors to imitate the colors of the maize and began to coat the corn with paint. As each ear was coated we rolled them on the tag board. Now this is a great art project to show texture but how does it connect to the letter F? Well, fish, of course! Painted corn kernels look like fish scales and after their paint dried I drew the outline of a fish on their work. Monday they will cut out their fish to hang on our wall.

Our next letter to study came straight from the children. They are so excited about seeing and exploring pumpkins that our letter next week will be P. Since it is a busy, short week we will carry it on to the following week. For some reason, pumpkin soup has become a hot topic so we will try making soup, pie and perhaps muffins to see how they best like their pumpkins.

Today was Buddy Day and they began working on books about how buddies treat each other. Kim and I found a cute idea to make books with a green face and a tail on the back. We are calling these books "Buddy Tails" (Get it?).

Here are some reminders for next week:

All Scholastic book orders are due Monday.
Wednesday is the Jeter's Farm field trip. Half day children leave at 1:00.
Thursday is our on-campus Fall Festival activities.
No school on Friday.
