We have two days under our belts now and the morning tears have already been replaced for a race to the current favorite toy. This is a sweet group that already is playing well together both inside and outside.
Yesterday we talked about our daily routine with the calendar and introduced a new "Days of the Week" song. You may know the old camp song about the "Riki Tiki Bear". I use it and add words to the end. So far I added "...you might want to take care." and "... it might give you a fright.". Who knows how I'll end the song tomorrow. The class already put in their own twist by renaming the bear Tricky Riki Tiki. Whew, that's a tongue twister!
They went to all three of their Enrichment classes and met their teachers. For those who are new to the school, Kim teaches music, Julie teaches Drama and Elena teaches Spanish.
We began the day (after the calendar) talking about facial expressions and matching them with our voices. I pulled out my large mirror and Mr. Face. He is a Velcro face with changeable facial parts. I gave them scenarios and had them look at their own faces in the mirror. We them tried to make Mr. Face look the same. Their discussion took an interesting twist about subtle differences in their expressions for the same emotion. The even realized they might tremble when afraid so I had to make Mr. Face shake.
After fruit break all the Early Learners had music together. This is their weekly "songfest" and they love it.
When my little friends returned I read a great book called "Duck! Rabbit!" by Amy Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld. It is about how two people see distinctly different figures in a cloud. By the end of the book they are convinced each other is right. We took blankets outside and laid down to do a little cloud gazing. It was a bit overcast so it was a bit challenging. Karen, the new computer teacher, joined us and saw several figures. It began to sprinkle so we ran inside to quickly paint cloud pictures. I only saw grey, blue and white clouds today but the children saw shades of green, pink, yellow and purple too. It's wonderful to see beyond the obvious!
We practiced for fire drills today. It may sound like bragging but I do make a reasonably (and obnoxiously) close fire alarm sound. Since they could see me make the noise they weren't scared but I noticed several covered their ears. Our alarm is also incredibly loud. You may hear about Ruth Ann and her loud noises tonight.
Thanks to those who already filled out my info sheet in the folders. I use these in so many ways throughout the year. You will receive several more papers in the next two days so be on the lookout.
