We have been very busy with learning around here! Work has begun in math and literacy activities and the first "letters" have been written to our OK buddies.
In math we have begun playing a matching game called "Clothesline". Clothing cards are drawn and matching items are hung on a clothesline. Three clotheslines must be filled to win the game. Currently the children are matching only by fabric. Soon we'll add matching by clothing item.
We also have begun sorting by two attributes at a time. This very bright group has already tripped me up by finding objects that could fit into several categories based on one's perception. Who let the philosophers come in here?
Last week the children drew pictures of themselves and then dictated a description of themselves. I wasn't surprised when none of the children described themselves by physical characteristics but chose instead to list their ages and likes. They were really very cute so I made color copies to place in their books about themselves.
Friday they traced hand prints with Kim's class and each buddy set told 5 things about themselves. These were then written on the fingers and cut out. Next they glued buddy hands together and put them in our window.
Today I introduced the first letter. Several of the children already know their letters and will have alternate activities but all children need to review the sounds of each letter. My husband and I made PVC pipe "phones" last year to use for literacy. Two elbows were glued together on a short tube to form a phone shape. this increases even the softest sound to quite loud and helps define the sound.
The letter of the week is F and our bag had a feather, four, fox, flamingo, flower, flip flops, firetruck, fake finger and Frankie Fish. I showed them the upper and lowercase F and explained the usage of the uppercase F. Since they love playing with Mr. Face in our room I found face parts for them to color, cut out and create their own funny face. They will soon be on our window to amuse who pass by.
Thursday is picture day for the Early Learners. Let the office know if you want sibling pictures. Our rain date is Friday.
Don't forget to send in Fall Festival money. Kudos to those who already sent me money! I have been asked about whether there is a charge for siblings with driving parents. Ned Jeter only mentioned a charge for parents so I will check on this question and get back to you.
