Is Christmas coming soon or is it my birthday? Either way, my class has been extraordinarily good today! We had a little talk this morning about some teasing that had hurt feelings and I gave the old "Don't say anything you don't want others saying to you" as a guide and they have been repeating it all day. I've even caught them being very kind to each other and making surprises for each other at the art table.
We had a math lesson this morning working on different ways to express a number. Today's number was 6 and they had to find 3 different ways to add sets of numbers to arrive at 6. The biggest challenge was to get the sticky-back foam to actually stick. Finally glue sticks solved the problem and we got back to the lesson. Most of them have caught on to this concept.
Wednesday is Buddy day and today was the highly anticipated paper making day. Before our buddies arrived I gave a demonstration to our class. For once, they knew before their buddies how to do something! When their buddies came in we set to work and in45 minutes had 23 postcard paper shapes. We placed cloth over them to soak up water during the day. I will leave them uncovered tonight and bring dry cloths for tomorrow. They may be ready for seeds to be added by tomorrow or Friday. The children have named this project "Seed Paper". We will give you more details later.
With Spring dirt, rainy day muddy shoes and art trash on the floor, our room was looking rather dirty. I picked up my broom and began to sweep. The next thing I knew Nora and Sofia were bagging the plastic milk bottles, Brandon was following me with a dust pan, Grace and Emma were picking up Little People toys, Xan and Logan got the rest of the toys and Rowan and Titus were cleaning the little bits of paper off the art area floor. I mentioned the work was faster when we all helped and as one voice they began to sing the "Clean Up" song. Sometimes my room is living in a Rogers and Hammerstein musical.
We are quickly approaching the Arts Festival. This is really an outstanding display of our schools visual (and individual), musical and dramatic arts. You will have an opportunity to see the visual art first (it will come home at Conferences) and then be treated to 3 mini musicals. The Early Learners are doing "The Three Piggy Opera" (hysterically funny), the upper and middle elementary classes are doing "Cinderella" and the Middle School will do "Music Man, Jr.". Many Early Learner parents are tempted to leave after their performance but I'm asking you to stay if at all possible. Our children will not have a chance to see the Middle School otherwise and they love plays. Everything will be over between 12:30 and 1:00 and it will be worth every minute of your time. It also gives parents a taste of the incredible fine arts program our children receive.
If you must leave, please let me know ahead of time so I can get costuming off and your child to you with as little interruption to the program as possible. It is also fine for your child to sit with you after their performance. Just give me the high sign.
