I love Wednesdays. We get to have time with our buddies and have extra music so the children always come back and sing a song. Their 3 Piggy Opera is going to be so funny judging by the songs they sing to me. I can't wait for Arts Festival.

Sofia was our leader and had "magic" rocks. Some were plastic while others were polished rocks. One looked to be a roughly cut purple rock. We discussed each one and guessed which were real and which were pretend. After some debate the children guessed correctly on all but the roughly cut purple rock. Since we couldn't decide ourselves, we thought we would leave it in the hands her parents to tell us.

Rowan's grandmother sent the 2 sequel books to "Rhyming Dust Bunnies". I first read "The Big, Scary Dust Bunny" which was very funny. I thought I could get by with just one book but they insisted I read "Where Will the Fat Cat Sit?" right away too. It is definitely kid humor. They laughed through both books. The faces of the animals in the books are enough to make anyone laugh.

We used our magnets some more today to review the concepts of gravity, magnetic pull and polarity. I was shocked -and amazed - at the amount they remembered. I wish my brain cells learned as quickly.

When our buddies arrived we talked about last week's rocket shots. Declan found and brought me an old film canister and I got 3 more at CVS. We talked about the difference in their shapes and why the cone-shaped nose of the rocket might be advantageous. I began by telling them the cone was streamlined when Sophie raised her hand to help finish the explanation. Now mind you she is a former student, experienced my sister's talk on propulsion and loves science. She told them it was all about aerodynamics and the shape of the nose lessened the force of air's downward pressure on the rocket. It was a proud moment for this geek.

There was nothing left to do but test our idea and see if the cone-nosed rocket went higher than the film canister when loaded with the same amount of alka-seltzer and water. Since the new canisters' lids don't fit as tightly as old ones, the canister leaked its water and didn't fire so technically we were right. The next question was how high would the rocket go with 2 alka-seltzers? Two and a half alka-seltzers later, we reached the height of the wall at the end of our building. Not back for a plastic toy made in China!

Tomorrow is our day with no Specials so we'll finish up several art items. I do need the children to wear old clothes again in case the paint finds its way beyond the smocks.

Friday we walk to Hollins for shortcake. Only 2 children have their money in so far and I really need the rest to come in tomorrow if possible. Let's review: the children get 1/2 a shortcake each which costs $3. Parents are welcome to pay only for their child or to send in extra for other children. Since we are walking I do ask that children wear shoes suitable for walking which rules out flip flops. Even though we are scheduled for 11:00 it will be warm so they may want to wear shorts.

It's not too late to sign up for your Festival volunteer hours. The weather will cooperate -I'm just sure - so it will a good time on 2 beautiful days.
