This was the last day of our letter G study. We have been working on a gingerbread house so in the past week we have read 'The Gingerbread Boy", "Gingerbread Friends" and those famous house eaters "Hansel and Gretel". Only Titus was familiar with this story but knew a slightly different version. After reading our version we discussed how Fairy Tales had been handed down orally until the Brothers Grimm wrote down the version they grew up hearing. We talked about the differences in the version I read, Titus' version and the one I learned as a child. There are many common factors but the the one that stood out most in the class' mind was the fact that the house could be eaten - just like ours. It was the impetus needed to finish decorating our newly named Hansel and Gretel House.
We had a shortened buddy time today so each set of buddies made a picture of a gingerbread house they would like to eat. They are quite colorful and (dare I say it?) yummy!
Speaking of food - there are still many spots left for volunteers on Baking Day. I know many parents are holding out for Festival days but may I point out we can't sell shortcakes that haven't been baked. So please go ahead and bake a few hours. I was able to 2 years ago and found it to be fun, fast moving work with lots of laughter. I promise there will still be plenty of jobs available on our Festival days.
