Our week has started with the exciting opportunity to have Art with Cherry. Every Spring the Early Learners get to prepare their Art Festival work under Cherry's creative and supervising eye. I love this time of year because she always has a new technique for me to take back into our classroom. We will see her Monday through Thursday this week.
Today we got watercolor paper wet, painted black paint on it and then salted the entire paper. The salt absorbs the paint to create white spots. The children then sponged white paint on black paper and black paint on white paper. Their last step was to use homemade rubberband "brushes" to dab white paint on black paper. All of today's paint was washable but tomorrow's project will use oil based paint so PLEASE DRESS YOUR CHILD IN OLD CLOTHES.
After morning circle Chloe pulled out her Show & Share which was a harmonica and a kazoo. She played us a tune on both and most of the children told me they had a harmonica at home. I told them to find them and we will have a class Harmonica Day!
Xan went to the Maple Syrup Festival in the Highlands with his grandparents on Saturday. If you've never been it certainly is a worth the trip to see how the sap is collected and boiled into syrup. He brought maple candy for the class. We tried a piece in class and to my surprise they all liked it. Since there was plenty I sent home another piece in a baggie.
Rhyming Bear went with Xan on this adventure. He certainly has traveled this year and had many exciting weekends with his friends.
Last week the children planted marigold seeds and strawberry plants. They were very surprised (as was I) to see the amount of growth over the weekend. I guess the plants were as excited to have warm weather as we all were. Hopefully this growth rate will continue so we'll have beautiful plants to sell at the Strawberry Festival.
You may hear that Hannah Montana made a visit to our classroom. It is true and we took a picture to remember the day. She didn't sing, or say much for that matter. Perhaps it is because she's made of cardboard. My older daughter got her from a movie store i Oklahoma and brought her home when she moved back. The children saw her in my Christmas pictures and begged to have her visit. I hope Disney is able to go on without her because the children aren't ready to let her go yet.
