Our 100th Day Celebration was exhausting but fun. The children were quite proud of their projects and couldn't wait to show their classmates. We finally got to wear our 100 Cheerios necklaces and take a class picture. We ended the fun by decorating their 100 cookies. The fun in our class and Tulie's is now on the blog. We took numerous pictures but it's worth wading through to see all the activities.
Today I was the leader (Okay, I forgot to make a new calendar) and had the children go to our Library and stuffed animal area. It is now filled with Dr. Seuss books and animals. Dr. Seuss birthday is tomorrow so in his honor we will be reading his books this month. The children will bring home a survey to you tomorrow. This will be your homework to help us with a math lesson. After reading Dr. Seuss for most of the month, I will then survey the children and compare their answers to you.
I introduced the letter G today. My letter box contained a giraffe, Grace's picture, garden gloves, green glitter, a gold piece, gray paper, grapes, a picture of a garage, a goat and geese. We discussed G's usual /g/ sound and its tricky use of the /j/ sound. The word garage is the perfect example. My box also had the story "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". Naturally they wanted the story read immediately. Next they wanted to act out the story but this had to wait until after fruit break. It took three times through the story for everyone to get at least one desirous role. All I can say is cute, cute, cute! Why don't I have a camcorder in this room?
We have as a class learned words in the -at and -ad word families. Today I introduced them to the -an family. Since they are now veterans they quickly put beginning sounds to the -an and figured out if they were real words. They discovered ban, can, Dan, fan, Jan, man, Nan, pan, ran, tan and van. I was curious to see their reaction when I put the letter X in front of -an. Without hesitation they yelled Xan's name and were convinced it was a word. I explained in other classrooms this wouldn't be considered a word but since we knew Xan we could be special and make it a word.
Today your child will bring home their new Leader calendar and I will post it on the blog. Tomorrow look for your homework surveys.
