Fridays begin with Music and Spanish so my time with my little friends is limited. When we were finally together after fruit break play we did our morning circle. I mentioned yesterday my surprise when Rowan completely led the circle. Well it happened again today. I was helping 2 children find kind things to say to each other when Grace picked up the hand and began the calendar. They were halfway through when I finished with the other two. I'm trying to see this as a well taught class and not a group that no longer needs their teacher to begin their day.
My computer is very slow and frustrating at times so yesterday afternoon I removed every program and pictures I could from it. Today I used my new extra memory to load Kindergarten Jump Start. It has wonderful educational games on the level of our children and I taught them how to play a math game today. The game uses 6 nesting dolls that must be lined up in order of size. The computer scrambles the dolls and then tells whether to put the dolls in ascending or descending order (via picture). The children must first identify where the dolls belong, grab the doll with the mouse and then drag it to the proper place. It can be challenging but they loved trying.
While a few worked on the computer I worked with 3 others on letter formation. A child's development is not usually even in all areas and I often have children whose academic skills exceed their fine motor skills. I had written out some sight words, several of their discovery words and their names on lined paper. I then paper clipped tracing paper on top and gave them markers to write over my letters. They had to tell me what each word was and then write it. This is the first time I have used this method and was quite pleased with the results. My three writers were just as pleased to have more accuracy in their writing.
Since the children can move to other rooms for lunch on Fridays, we had company today. At one point I had 18 children in here but an old bedspread turns the floor into a picnic area. One of our guests was Logan's little sister who was visiting with Katlyn today. Logan was so excited she was coming to visit we invited her to stay for lunch. You have never seen a prouder big brother!
Here are two reminders:
1. Scholastic book orders are due Monday. You may order online or through me.
2. Don't forget to sign up for Baking Day.
