For those who tried to find our school on PBS last night and couldn't - well, it's because the second showing isn't until Tuesday evening. Knowing I would probably forget again by then, Aaron Plaski sent us the link to watch this segment of "Parenting". The class watched it today and loved seeing their friends and themselves on TV. Julie Newman is the host of the show and interviews Holly with great footage of our Early Learner students. It was very well done and I must say I am impressed with us!
You will have to copy and paste the address. Once there click on Part 2. Below is the link:

Our group was small and our morning was shortened but we did manage to get in a fun Math lesson. Last week the children sorted a tub of foam shapes. They had to sort the glittered shapes from the foam shapes. I pulled these back out today and we talked again about their sorting fun. Using two large plastic circles, I put glittered shapes in one and plain shapes in the other. I then pointed out that both groups had heart shapes in them and wondered where they really belonged. The suggestions were very creative to say the least but when I pulled out a third circle they wanted to give the hearts their own grouping. What a discussion that followed when I again pointed out the hearts already were in a group. When I overlapped the third heart onto the other two (making a Venn diagram) the answer became clear to most.
We then transferred this work to paper with three circles already drawn. They used the foam shapes to make their own Venn diagram. Any new concept, when first presented will have those who understand immediately and those who need a little more explanation. It was wonderful to overhear the children explaining this concept to each other.
Recess meant snow play today. After pulling on the boots, zipping the coats and putting on all the gloves, the children had about 15 minutes to play but they gave it their best! I finally thought to go out and take a few pictures. If I didn't already love this school, watching children play in the snow during recess would be reason enough to come here.
Warming up my little cold, wet chocks brought another issue to mind. Please return any pants, socks and underwear your child may have changed to during this season. We no longer have any EL spare long pants and socks. You may want to send in extra even if your child hasn't yet had to change. It looks like Mother Nature isn't finished with the white stuff yet. Watch the news tonight and tomorrow morning just in case....
Scholastic Book orders are due Wednesday, Feb. 10. You may want to try ordering online with this iffy weather.
